Thursday’s Friends of Clayoquot Sound AGM proved the enviro movement is no stranger to titanic egos, despite it’s let’s-all-just-get-along veneer. In a community-alienating move, one board nominee was railroaded off the board after agreeing to participate, because other nominees thought he might not share the Friends’ traditional “consensus approach” — because of a 10-year-old argument with one of the principals.
The would-be Friend stormed out of the meeting in anger and disgust, presumably to spread the word throughout town, while presentations continued inside on why the group seems to be losing local support.
Word on the street is that the organization may now be changing its name from Friends of Clayoquot Sound to Friends of Val Langer, but this remains unconfirmed.

I think its great to keep a watchful eye on these developers but be careful you don’t throw everything they do into one big negative bucket. I moved to Ukee in the early ninetys when everyone was raw raw mac blo. What an ugly little town it was then and some of the people in the red and white mac trucks were as ugly as their clear cuts. At least with people like Elkie she wants to keep trees and natural beauty as a part of the theme and also the ocean and its natural beauty as a strong sustainable town theme. Hey I’m all for satire and anyone that thinks they are beyond criticism is the first one I like to get a rise out of but lets not forget what a stupid little town this use to be. I think its got alot of improving to do, but at least now when tourists come to town they realize we have nice beaches and beautiful natural resources. Maybe thats why some of the old guard is so upset with the secret getting out–its not so easy to pollute it or chop it down when more people love it. Ellkie got mac blo beat by a country mile. I remember how far down the list nature use to be to this town. At least with current efforts with bears and cleaning our beaches we have something to be proud of. One more thing, the locals that use to ( or still do ) throw garbage on the beach or let their little drunk teenagers break bottles on the beach are the same ones crying about the development and how horrible it all is. The development, done with alot of money and effort is meant to compliment the surrounding nature and make it so more people can enjoy it. Food for thought.
