Council picks new council

12 June, 2008 · 3 Comments

In a brief in camera session last week, Ucluelet council decided on the results of next November’s civic election.

In Canada, a governing body normally does not pick its own successors, but in Ucluelet’s case the lack of voter interest has been so marked for decades that past councils were forced to create their own system. The choosing of a replacement council by a sitting council is now a Ukee tradition.

As widely expected, Dianne St. Jacques will sit again in the mayor’s place. Councillors Bill Irving and Eric Russcher (both of I-R-J Day fame) will return to the same chairs. Councillor Dario Corlazzoli will be replaced by the next name on the rotating list of approved councillors, and as usual there will be one “wild card” seat left open to maintain the illusion that Ucluelet is an operating democracy.

All existing policies and procedures, both public and behind-the-scenes, will remain unaltered. As has been the norm for the past several decades, members of council will continue to hold influential positions on all key committees and organizations in town, thus ensuring that the same narrow set of ideas and ideologies rules every game in town.

Council says Ukee residents can continue to bask in their political fog as nothing is expected to change. Ever.

I have to say I really like alot of your tattler, but an emerging theme of hypocracy is emerging. It seems like some people are fair game for put downs and critiquing while others are off limits. Come on guys, the beauty of satire is everyone at least in the public eye is fair game. You guys allow some people to just get smashed (and some of it I agree with) but if your not careful you are just going to be a boring left of centre sort of funny but not really twin of the CBC. Yikes. Maybe a wake up call for you. Let all sides have a say and I think your entertainment value and credibility will go way up. Ucluelet is made up of many different personalities and it will be a better place if all voices are heard, not just the politically correct ones.

Come on, I think your comment about the Tattler being politically correct is incorrect. Check your spelling as well. The Tattler let you submit your mindless crap didn’t they. It sounds like maybe they won’t submit some of your comments and this is probably for the better good of Ucluelet and yourself. Lets all have a voice, I agree, but if you can’t at least be funny about it then I think your missing the point.

Keep up the good work Tattler. I LOVE UCLUELET!!!!!!!

  • Mention of Names // 6 August, 2008 at 4:37 pm

The first guys might have a point though about the mention of some names while others are not as much targets. Is there a prescribed point of view that is acceptable or is it just what your in the mood for. Its still a great little Tattler, sometimes just a little one sided. Ucluelet is beautiful both in nature and variety of its people. Yes that means there are alot of different view points. We’re all Canadians, I think we are capable of hearing them all.
