ELKEULET

The Tattler has obtained, at outrageous expense, an artist’s conception of the updated version of the much-photographed “Welcome to Ucluelet” sign at the entrance to town, carved by famous local chainsaw carver Terry McKinnon.

The sign, sources say, will soon be refurbished to better suit Ucluelet’s evolving nature, as the town is rebuilt posthaste in the image of its chief developer, Marine Drive Property’s Elke Loof-Koehler.

Click the pic to get a large (1 Meg) version suitable for printing, framing and target practice.

welcome to elkeulet

Thanks to the original Photoshop whiz (he shall remain nameless), who was happy to let the Tattler display it.

  • Stop crapping in our ocean // 4 August, 2008 at 9:59 am

Its great to have a blog that really keeps people laughing at themselves. Living in Ucluelet for years and working in Tofino I have some funny stories to share as well. I found the little arguments that go on between Ucluelet and Tofino to be quite entertaining. Being a Ucluelet resident though I had to put my foot in the occasional Tofino mouth. I did this simply by stating, “At least we don’t flush our sewer into the ocean” I won every argument with this truth. Sorry Tofino, but until you invest in a state of the art sewage treatment plant like Ucluelet or until you stop simply going to the bathroom, keep your self righteous comments to yourselves.

  • Elkie for mayor // 4 August, 2008 at 10:40 am

Now, now, Elkie has made some mistakes no doubt, but can you really make her out to be the empress of Ucluelet. Thanks to her we are at least moving away from the reputation that Mac blo established for us. I mean Ucluelet has never been a great example of anything. Its a complicated little town. I like some of the locals, hate others. The trouble is we all live in the town and very few of us have a voice. I will say this about Elkie and Mr. Duke though, they supported our new and small business while other so called great Ucluelet locals marched by whispering,”they’ll never last” Thanks to people like Elkie and Mr. Duke and all the tourists (and a few great locals) we did better than last.

  • Tofino and Ucluelet // 4 August, 2008 at 10:45 am

Why can’t we all just get along. Tofino craps in the ocean and Ucluelet cuts down the trees. So Ucluelet gets to eat Tofino’s crap and Tofino gets to breath Ucluelets chainsaw air. Its a harmony tale, two towns learning to compromise. Still, until Tofino stops the flush to the sea one could argue—at least trees grow back.

Just when you think you have the world figured out and people pegged for the jerks that you know they are ———something happens that changes your opinions yes even your little world. As a small business owner I can say that Mr. Duke and Mrs. Elk have also supported our business while other so called super Ucluetians have not. I think its great to have debate and various opinions but lets keep in mind we are all just people and I think we all live in an awesome town. Sometimes we can’t stand eachother but lets make sure we give each other the benefit of doubt we all demand for ourselves. After all if Marine drive properties was developed like the rest of Ucluelet (like the Edge subdivision) there would be no trees for the deer to hang out. At least Elk keeps as many trees as possible in her developments.
